Looking for Mentors with Subject Matter Expertise?
You have a client who could benefit from expertise you do not have. Or you want to have a discussion with a mentor who may know more about an area than you do so you can learn more about the area. Or you just have an interest in something and want to engage with someone who know more about it than you do. And you know there are probably mentors who know these things but you do not know who they are.
We’ve all been there. You are not alone.
Here are sources that can help, in order of priority for “fast help”:
Regional Subject Matter Experts - Connects you with Mid-Atlantic Region mentors and subject matter experts who have volunteered to help other mentors in the region when they are stuck when working with a client. Need help in a covered area? Reach out to one of the mentors in this section. If you do not see a SME in the area where you need help, move on to the next option. If you are a subject matter expert or wish to recommend another SME within our region, please do so using the “Contact Us” button at the bottom of the page.
Peer to Peer Support On Vol Help Center. Includes mentor posts on many topics. Mentors can add their own posts and ask questions. (Be sure to be logged in with your scorevolunteer.org account.)
SCORE.ORG where you can use the same simple tool our clients use to find a mentor who accepts direct client requests and has a desired expertise.
Engage where you can search for mentors with expertise, SCORE wide. This is the most comprehensive of these tools
SCORE.ORG Search
SCORE.ORG is the search capability our clients use when they want to find a mentor with specific expertise anywhere in the country. This tool is easy to use. It searches all mentors who accept direct requests who have not met their weekly direct request limit. You can access this search capability via this link.
When you enter a keyword or term in the “Enter keyword or term” box, the engine will search the following fields in participating mentors’ profiles: How I Can Help You, Areas of Expertise, Industry Expertise (as well as Communication Method, Languages location and name). The more robust a mentor’s profile, including their Engage “How I can Help You” [1] field, the more likely they will show in a search. You can view the mentor’s profile by clicking on “VIEW PROFILE”.
[1] To increase the chance that you will show up in a search launched by a client seeking a mentor, include keywords for all specific specialties / unique areas of expertise in your Engage “How I can Help You” Profile
Engage Search
The Engage Search is the most robust tool available to us. Unlike the results of the SCORE Search, it is not limited to mentors who accept direct client requests. It searches virtually every field in our Engage profiles, including free form Education and Work Experience fields. The more robust a mentor’s profile, including their Engage “How I can Help You” [2] field, the more likely they will show in a search.
The “return results” page is not as easily viewable as the SCORE.ORG Search “return results” page. But it works and once you get comfortable with it, you will find it to be a very useful tool.
Enter your query in the Engage Search Bar at the top of your home page. In this example I am searching for “media and radio”. Press “Search.”
[2] Want to increase the chance that you will show up in a search launched by one of your peers? Be sure to include keywords for all specific specialties / unique areas of expertise in your Engage “How I can Help You” Profile.
Engage will likely return many records. Now you need to refine your search criteria by using the boxes on the left.
I refined my search by using the boxes on the left to just select active mentors. You may want to use additional criteria.
The next step is up to you.
Send a broadcast email to multiple selected mentors: Copy and paste multiple mentors email addresses into an email and send them your question. I have found this works best if I select at least 5-6 mentors from the search list. People can be busy, not checking their email, out of town, etc. Do not expect a response from everyone.
Research each mentor before you reach out to them: Click on a mentor’s name to learn more about them and their expertise before deciding whether you wish to reach out to them. Note if you view a mentor’s expertise, then click back to the prior page (your search page) you will find that Engage has deleted all your filters and that you will need to re-enter your search criteria on the left hand. This can be cumbersome if you wish to do a deep dive into many mentors as you will need to reenter the criteria after each deep dive. This is not perfect. But it works.
